The Brazilian Bombshell! The original Lady GaGa, Carmen Miranda appeared on the Hollywood soundstages almost, it appeared, as if from nowhere. Already a star in her adopted home of Brazil, Carmen Miranda rocketed onto movie screens around the world, and within a year was Hollywood’s highest paid female star. Yet her reign of glory was brief, and she was tragically dead by the age of merely forty-six.
Remembered only today as the star with the tropical fruit hats, her life was indeed both spectacular and tragic, and this specially-commissioned play by Andrew Martin puts her firmly back in the spotlight. The play is a tour-de-force for a solo performer, and negotiations are in progress for a star to portray this great artist for an initial London season in late 2014, to be followed by her spectacular re-entry to New York in 2015.
